Background:Postpartum depression (PPD) has emerged as a major health care issue around the world, while the exact etiology of PPD remains unknown. In view of its high prevalence and potentially severe consequences, there have been growing interests in identifying interventions that effectively prevent PPD. This research was aimed to investigate the preventive effectiveness of an emotional self-management training program for PPD in antenatal women. Methods:Two hundred and forty peripartum women (32weeks) were recruited from The First Hospital of Hangzhou, from January to October2013. After completing the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), they were randomly assigned into intervention group and control group equally. The intervention group had the "emotion self-management group training", while control group were trained with routine intervention in the same form. Both groups completed the PHQ-9after4weeks training and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) after6weeks postpartum. Results:The mean score of PHQ-9of intervention group was lower than the control group at36weeks. The mean score of EPDS of intervention group was lower than that in control group after6weeks postpartum, while the number of diagnosed PPD patients in intervention group (n=32.6%) was less than that in control group (n=109.7%).Conclusion:The "emotion self-management group training" in peripartum women could effectively reduce the occurrence of PPD.
