Objective To examine the effect of home-based exercise combined with Non-steroid Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) on elder knee osteoarthritis among knee pain, function and quality of life. Methods A total of138patients with knee osteoarthritis entered this trial which were randomly divided into two groups:an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group patients were treated with both home-based exercise and NSAIDs. The patients in control group were only treated with NSAIDs. Two groups were assessed before treatment and after8weeks of treatment with Japanese knee osteoarthritis Measure (JKOM)、 Western Ontario and McMaster University Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC)、Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and dosage of painkillers.Results64patients of experimental group were involved in the result analysis, and62patients of control group were involved in the result analysis. Between these two groups, there was no significant difference in gender, age, body mass index, or each score at baseline.①JKOM:Before treatment there was no significant difference between the two groups. There were significant differences in both groups after treatment compared with those before treatment (P<0.05). Additionally, there was significant difference compared two groups after treatment (P<0.05).②WOMAC:Before treatment there was no significant difference between the two groups. There were significant differences in both groups after treatment compared with those before treatment (P<0.05), except stiff in control group. Additionally, there was significant difference compared two groups after treatment (P<0.05).③VAS: Before treatment there was no significant difference between the two groups. There were significant differences in both groups after treatment compared with those before treatment (P<0.05). Additionally, there was no significant difference compared two groups after treatment (P>0.05).④osage of painkillers were also reduced compared with the control group after treatment, there was significant difference between the two groups (P<0.05).Conclusion Both groups showed a significant curative efficacy in patients, and the treatment of home-based exercise combined with NSAIDs is more effective.
