Objectives: To compare the effects on adult male penis development betweenredundant prepuce and phimosis and to determine the most suitable time forcircumcision, when indicated. Methods: Data (penile coronal diameter) was collected from264adult inpatients witheither redundant prepuce or phimosis inpatients, who were surgically circumcisedbetween May1,2012and June31,2013. All patients had no other penile or endocrinediseases. Patients were divided into2groups―the redundant prepuce group and thephimosis group. Statistical analyses were performed to compare the2groups witheach other and with data from normal Chinese men (who lived in Shanghai andNanjing). Results: Our study data showed that penile diameters of patients with phimosis weresmaller than those of patients with simple redundant prepuce (P<0.01), and alsothe diameters of normal Chinese men (P<0.01). There was no significantdifference in penile diameter between the simple redundant prepuce patients andnormal Chinese males (P>0.05).Conclusion: Redundant prepuce and phimosis can both obstruct development of thepenis. Phimosis is more closely related to adult male penis development. Earliercircumcision can reduce the obstruction caused by phimosis on patient peniledevelopment and promote improvement of the penis diameter growth and sexualfunction.
