Objectives:The study was to investigate the level of uncertainty in illness and coping style ofpatients with oral cancer, and analysis the affecting factors of the uncertainty inillness, explore the correlation between illness uncertainty and coping style.Methods:160patients with oral cancer were asked to administer a questionnaire whichcomposes of general information, the Mishel Uncertainty in Illness Seale for Adult(MUIS-A) and the Medical Coping Modes Questionnaire(MCMQ). All data wereanalyzed by statistical package for social science(SPSS17.0).Statistical methodsincluded descriptive analysis,one-salmple t-test,one-way ANOVA, Spearmancorrelation.Results:1. All the Patients experienced illness uncertainty, the uncertainty in illness scorewas97.36±8.04, the patients with moderate uncertainty accounted for96.7%.2. Different gender and whether or not to merge complications of oral cancerpatients score difference on the dimension of ambiguity (P<0.05);Different familyper capita income and family affordability score difference on the dimension ofunpredictability (P<0.05);Different times of hospitalization in the lack of informationon the dimensions of the score difference(P<0.05);Consciously the severity ofdisease in different dimension of ambiguity and unpredictability dimension and thedifferences between uncertainty on the total score(P<0.05).3. Oral cancer patients with ways to cope with significantly lower than the generalclinical patients,Avoidance coping style is higher than general clinical patients, have nostatistical significance in resignation. 4. The score of total uncertainty, ambiguity uncertainty were negatively correlatedwith confrontation; The score of total uncertainty, ambiguity uncertainty andunpredictablity uncertainty were positively correlated with resignation; The ambiguityuncertainty was negatively correlated with avoidance.Conclusion:1. Oral cancer patients surveyed are widespread disease uncertainty, and most inthe medium level.2. The influencing factors of uncertainty in oral cancer: gender, family per capitaincome and family affordability, the number of hospitalizations, the severity of diseaseand whether or not to merge complications.3. Compared with general clinical patients there were differences in confrontationand avoidance, have no statistical significance in resignation.4. The positive and avoidance coping style were helpful to decrease the degree ofuncertainty of patients with oral cancer.the resigned coping style increase the degree ofuncertainty.
