Objective:Discuss the correlation of the nasal septum deviation with thickness of nasalmucosa andanatomical variations of the middle turbinate through the determination of nasalcavity andparanasal sinus of patient with nasal septum deviation by CT scan.Method:172corno-CT images which scanednasal cavity and paranasal sinus of patientwere taken. The deviation angle was measured and recorded. These patients were dividedinto3groups as different deviation angles: mild group (less than8°), moderate group(between8°and15°), serious group (more than15°), respectively. Determined themucosal thickness of both sides of nasal septum and inferior nasal concha, and analyzedoccurrence rate of the anatomical variations of the middle turbinate. The difference amongthese data within the group or different groups were under the statistical analysis. The nasalcavity which deviated as nasal septum named homolateral nasal cavity, otherwisecontralateral nasal cavity. In one group, contralateral one was research object, whilehomolateral one was control group. Among the three groups, moderate group and seriousgroup were research groups, and mild group was control group.Result:1.In one group:(1) Comparison of the mucosal thicknessmild group: contralateral nasal septum mucosa and mucosa were thicker thanhomolateral one. Inside mucosa of inferior nasal concha mucosa signally became thicker, while no obvious difference was found in outside mucosa.moderate group: contralateral nasal septum mucosa and inferior nasal concha mucosawere thicker than homolateral one. Both inside and outside mucosa of inferior nasal concha mucosa signally became thicker.serious group:contralateral nasal septum mucosa and inferior nasal concha mucosa werethicker than homolateral one. Inside mucosa of inferior nasal concha mucosa signallybecame thicker, while no obvious difference was found in outside mucosa.(2) Comparison of occurrence rate about anatomical variations of the middle turbinateMiddle turbinate gasification occurred more in contralateral one.No obvious difference of occurrence rate about middle turbinate recurvatumwas found inboth sides of nasal septum.2. In different groups(1) Comparison of mucosal thickness of both sides of nasal septumcontralateralone: the contralateral mucosal thickness were different in three groups. Bothmoderate group and serious group were thicker than mild group.homolateral one: the homolateralmucosal thickness were different in three groups.Moderate group was near tomild group, but serious group was thinner than mild group.(2) Comparison of two sides of inferior nasal concha mucosa:No obvious difference was found in three groups.(3)Comparison of occurrence rate about anatomical variations of the middle turbinate:The occurrence rate of middle turbinate gasificationand middle turbinate recurvatumwere similar.Conclusion:1.Nasal septum deviation leaded to the changes of nasal cavity mucosal thickness, nasalseptum deviation had seriously affection on contralateral nasal septum mucosal thicknessincrassation, and the mucosa incrassated with the deviation increase. Meanwhile, homolateral mucosa got thinner only when the nasal septum deviated seriously.2. Nasal septum deviation resulted in the mucosa of contralateral inferior nasal conchaplump and inside mucosa was obviously plump, while outside one was not.3.Middle turbinate gasification occurred more in contralateral deviation. The correlationbetween the occurred rate and the deviation was not obvious. Middle turbinate recurvatumhad nothing to do with the deviation.
