The Yellow Emperor’s Inner Classic (Neijing) is one of the earliest medical classics in China that drew out the framework of TCM basic theory with its abundant content, providing solid foundation for the theoretical and clinical development in the following generations. Neijing is recognized the source of dryness syndrome for it ample content regarding etiology, pathogenesis, clinical manifestation and treatment principles. Since the neijing, the following literature before the Song dynasty emphasizes on describing the symptoms such as dry eyes, mouth and throat, dry skin, hand and foot chap, dry stool that being the manifestations of dryness syndrome. After the Jin dynasty, the theory review and clinical experience became much more than before, the discussion about the pathogen, pathogenesis, nature of the disease and the prescription can be seen in the physicians like Liu Wansu, Yu Jiayan, Wu Jutong, Ye Tianshi and so on. The modern physicians believe that the pathogen of the syndrome is complex and many viscera were involved by inherit the theory in neijing and the dryness syndrome treatment of the physicians in different former dynasties.The project systematically sorted out, analyzed, summarized and discussed dryness syndrome related theories and its clinical application thorough literature study of Neijing and other medical classics. In accordance with clinical experience of ancient TCM practitioners as well as my supervisor, the syndrome differentiation for dryness syndrome was concluded so as to provide reference for modern clinical application of dryness syndrome.The project were divided into two parts:the first part detailed theoretical literature research regarding dryness of ancient and modern medical practitioners. Starting from Neijing, the author studied some representative literatures; combining with modern medical practitioners understanding, the paper systematically sorted out frequently clinical symptoms, etiology and pathogenesis, and treatment principles and approaches, especially that from classics after Song Dynasty. The second part studied clinical application of dryness syndrome, in which commonly seen dryness syndrome differentiation was illustrated in order to provide reference for its treatment in clinic.
