Objective: To measure the indexes of the lip nasal soft tissue profiles of theinfants with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate, and then analyse thecharacteristics. It will provide a theoretical reference for the clinical treatment andefficacy assessment of unilateral complete cleft lip. Methods: Ninety-two infants with unilateral complete cleft lip and palateincluding fifty-seven males and thirty-five females were selected from thechildren who were treated in the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery ofstomatological hospital affiliated Nanchang university from2011to2012. Onehundred normal infants including fifty males and fifty females were selected as thecontrol group. Their ages range from3to6months. The facial basic measurementindexes of anthropometry were measured twice with Farkas, direct measurementmethod of maxillofacial anthropometry, and then took an average. Themeasurements were input to Excel database, then the mean value and standarddeviation were calculated and analyzed by SPSS17.0. The measurement indexes andsymmetry were compared between cleft lip and palate group and normal group bygroup or paired t-test, significance levels were0.05. The correlations between anytwo of these indexes were analyzed.Result:1.The mean value and standard deviation of28facial basic measurementindexes were obtained from normal infants and infants with unilateral complete cleftlip and palate.2.Compared the measurements of cleft lip and palate group with normal group, three indexes including lateral upper vermilion heigh in the affected side, upper lipheight in the unaffected side, the nose bottom width in the unaffected side, wereno statistically significant difference (P>0.05); the other indexes were statisticallysignificant difference (P<0.01).3.In group of unilateral complete cleft lip and palate, the measurements werestatistically significant difference between the unaffected side and the affected side(P<0.01);in normal group, there was no statistically difference between the left and right side (P>0.05).4. The correlation analysis of measurements in cleft lip and palate groupshowed that there were correlations and statistically significance among severalindexes. Conclusion: By measuring indexes and analyzing the characteristics of thelip-nasal soft tissue profiles of the infants with unilateral complete cleft lip andpalate, we found that unilateral complete cleft lip and palate was a complex lip-nasaldeformity, formed a whole in three dimension. It displayed tissue defect anddisplacement. The measurement indexes differed greatly, but there was a obviouspositive correlation between paired indexes of the same individual.
