Objective To study the relationship between blood pressure variability and serum highsensitive C-reactive protein(hs-CRP) and matrix metalloproteinase-9(MMP-9) inpatients with essential hypertension. Methods A total of149patients were included in the study. The participants weredivided into two groups: those with hypertension (n=117) and those withouthypertension(n=32). According to the results of24h ambulatory blood pressuremonitoring for the select117cases with essential hypertension. The patients withhypertension were divided into low and high variability groups according to the50thpercentile of24h SBPV. We kept the record of the clinic blood pressure (CRP), age andbody mass index(BMI). Blood tests, including fasting plasma glucose(FPG),triglyeride(TG), total cholesterol(TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C),high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C), uric acid(UA), serum creatinine(Cr),blood urea nitrogen(BUN), cystatin c(CysC) and homocysteine(Hcy). Hs-CRP wasmeasured with turbidimetry and MMP-9with enzyme linked immunosorbent assay inthe total patients. The results were analyzed to see if there was any statisticallysignificant different among the groups. The correlations between24hSBPV and FPG,TG, TC, LDL-C, HDL-C, UA, Cr, BUN, CysC and Hcy were analyzed withmultivariable regression analyses. Results The patients with essential hypertension had significantly higher24hSBPV(P<0.01) than those without hypertension. The results of serum hs-CRP andMMP-9also had significantly higher in the patients with hypertension than thosewithout hypertension(P<0.01). Compared with the patients with lower BPV, the serumhs-CRP and MMP-9increased significantly in the patients with higher BPV(P<0.01).Pearson relation analysis showed that24hSBPV level had significant positivecorrelation with age, course of disease, LDL-C, hs-CRP and MMP-9in those withhypertension. Multivariate regression analysis showed that the LDL-C, hs-CRP, MMP-9were positively correlated factors of24hSBPV.Conclusions The BPV is related to hs-CRP and MMP-9in patients with essentialhypertension. The hs-CRP and MMP-9are closely related with target organ damage inpatients with essential hypertension. It is important to control the level of the BPV in thehypertension treatment. It seems that the BPV of EH is a risk fact for cardiovasculardisease. The BPV is related to hs-CRP and MMP-9in patients with EH. It is indicatingthat compared with the lower BPV group, the inflammatory response and the severity ofendothelium dependent vasodilatation the higher BPV group was significantly higher. The treatment of hypertension is an integrated process, we should pay attention to notonly blood pressure, but also anti-inflammatory and to improve endothelial function.
