The Study On The Relationship Between Personality And Constitution In TCM Based On The Five-Pattern Personality Inventory And The Five-Five Constitution Inventory

Object:To analyze the correlation between personality and constitution from variety aspects. Provide the solid evidence for the Chinese medical theory of "integration of shape and spirit".Methods:Choose data from national survey and college students survey as research subject, which were completed by the "Five-Pattern Personality Inventory","Five-Five Pattern Constitution Inventory" and "SCL-90(Symptom Checklist90)" test in2008and2009.Use single sample T test, Pearson product-moment correlation, exploratory factor analysis, structural equation model analysis, regression analysis, chi-square test statistical analysis to analyze the correlation between personality and constitution.Results:l.The constitution characteristic of the typical personality group:For typical Taiyang person, the constitution score of normal constitution, yang hot constitution, wind tended constitution are significantly higher than national level, and the constitution scores of yang insufficient constitution, enegery insufficient constitution are significantly lower than national type(P<0.05); For typical Shaoyang person, the constitution score of normal constitution, yang hot constitution, are significantly higher than national level, and the constitution scores of enegery stasis constitution significantly lower than national type(P<0.05); For typical Yin-Yang Balanced person, the constitution score of normal constitution, yang hot constitution, wind tended constitution are significantly higher than national level, and the constitution scores of yang insufficient constitution, yin insufficient constitution, dryness tended constitution, wet tended constitution enegery insufficient constitution, enegery stasis constitution, hemo stasis constitution are significantly lower than national type(P<0.05); For typical Shaoyin person, the constitution score of wind tended constitution are significantly higher than national level (P<0.05); For typical Taiyin person, the constitution score of yin cold constitution, yang insufficient constitution, enegery stasis constitution, hemo stasis constitution are significantly higher than national level, and the constitution scores of normal constitution, phlegm constitution, wind tended constitution are significantly lower than national type(P<0.05).2. Yin and Yang dimension correlation between Five-Five Pattern Constitution and Five-Pattern Personality of college freshman:Yang score of personality shows positive correlation with Yang score of constitution(P<0.05),and shows negative correlation with Yin score of personality(P<0.01); Yin score of personality shows positive correlation with Yin score of constitution(P<0.01), and shows negative correlation with Yang score of constitution(P<0.01); Yang score of constitution shows positive correlation with Yin score of constitution(P<0.01).3. Exploratory factors analysis for Five-Five Pattern Constitution:13kinds of constitution can be summed up to4constitution factors. Factor1includes yin cold constitution, yang insufficient constitution, wet tended constitution, phlegm constitution, enegery insufficient constitution, named by cold-dampness type; factor2includes wind tended constitution, normal constitution, enegery insufficient constitution, named by moderate type; factor3includes, yang hot constitution, yin insufficient constitution named by hot tended type; factor4includes dryness tended constitution, hemo stasis constitution, blood insufficient constitution, enegery stasis constitution, enegery insufficient constitution, named by stasis type. The four factors cumulatively explain73.76%of the total variance.4. Correlation between Five-Pattern Personality and four constitution factors: Taiyang personality of college freshman shows positive correlation with moderate type and hot tended type(P<0.01), and shows negative correlation with stasis type(P<0.01); Shaoyang personality of college freshman shows positive correlation with moderate type and hot tended type(P<0.01), and shows negative correlation with stasis type and cold-dampness type(P<0.01,P<0.05); Yin-Yang balanced personality shows positive correlation with moderate type (P<0.01), and shows positive correlation with stasis type(P<0.01); Shaoyin personality shows negative correlation with hot tended type(P<0.05); Taiyin personality shows positive correlation with stasis type and cold-dampness type(P<0.01,P<0.01), and shows negative correlation with moderate type(P<0.01).5. Three acceptable nested models were setted up based on the theory. In the three nested models, GFI、AGFI、NFI、TLI、CFI of model3are all less than0.9, RMSEA of model3is greater than0.08, so the hypothesis of model3was abadoned. Through the comparison of nested models, model1was significantly better than model2.6. A simplified model1’was setted up after revising model1repeatedly. In the analysis, which shows the prognosis of psychological symptoms, we found that Taiyin personality has the strongest positive effect on the total score of psychological symptoms(the total effect was0.450, without indirect effect), normal constitution has the strongest negative effect on the total score of psychological symptoms(the total effect was-0.296, direct effect was-0.170, indirect effect was-0.126).Conclusion:1. There is a high correlation between personality and constitution.2. Personality and constitution with the same Yin or Yang attribute has a certain correlation. The opposition of Yin and Yang is obvious in personality. However, the opposition of Yin and Yang is not obvious in constitution for the existence of the imbalance between Yin and Yang.3.13kinds of constitution can be summed up to4constitution factors according to the exploratory factors analysis for Five-Five Pattern Constitution. They are cold-dampness type, moderate type, hot tended type and stasis type.4. There is a certain correlation between Five-Pattern Personality and four constitution factors.5. By introducting psychological symptoms as the dependent variable to study the correlation between personality and constitution, and using structural equation model to analyze the hypothesis, we concluded that constitution couldn’t be ignored on its effect on personality. At the same time, in the process that constitution affects psychological symptoms, personality has a moderating effect.
