Objective: To compare the effects between Transpedicular screw-rod fixation andBalloon dilatation kyphoplasty for the treatment of Thoracolumbar VertebralCompression Fractures. Methods: Thirty-eight consecutive patients with fresh and single leverthoracolumbar vertebral Pure compression fractures were collected dating from October2008to January2011. There were22cases who were accepted the operation ofTranspedicular screw-rod fixation(group A), There were16cases who were acceptedthe operation of Balloon dilatation kyphoplasty (group B). The anterior wall height andkyphotiic angle of the compressed vertebral body, which from Side an X-ray ofpreoperation, postoperative instant and after1.5year of the operation were measuredrespectively, and then evaluated and compared the compression ratio and recovery rate.Analysis and compared the pain which from the injured vertebral body at the time. Thepain level were measured according to Visual Analogue Scale. Results: The38cases were all followed-up after the operation. Patients werefollowed-up for16~24months (average18months). There were no statisticallydifferent in the postoperative instant recovery rate of the anterior wall height andkyphotiic angle of the compressed vertebral body between two groups after surgery. There were statistically different in the postoperative instant VAS of the compressedvertebral body between two groups after surgery. There were statistically different inthe the compression ratio of anterior wall height and kyphotiic angle of the compressedvertebral body between two groups after1.5years of the surgery. There were nostatistically different in the VAS of the compressed vertebral body between two groupsafter1.5years of the surgery(P <0.05is considered with statistically difference). Therewere no breakage and loose of internal fixation occur in the group A among the followed-up after the surgery. There were no vertebral body fracture which adjacent tothe compressed vertebral body occur in the group B among the followed-up after thesurgery. Conclusions: Transpedicular screw-rod fixation and Balloon dilatationkyphoplasty were both important and effective ways, which in the treatment ofthoracolumbar vertebral compression fracture. After the Transpedicular screw-rodfixation had been removed from the compressed vertebral body, the height and spinalcorrective angle of the compressed vertebral body Prone to lose. Balloon dilatationkyphoplasty can relief the pain of the compressed vertebral body very fast, and canprevent the height and spinal corrective angle of the compressed vertebral body fromlosing, and this operation is more suitable for osteoporotic vertebral compressionfracture.
