OBJECTIVE: This study aims to analyze the feasibility, surgicalprocedure and treatment outcome of nipple-areola complex sparing modified radicalmastectomy in the small-breast patients with early-stage breast cancer. METHODS:We analyzed records of23patients with breast volume less than180cm3and clinicalstatus of I or II, who were admitted in our hospital from July2007to May2012,accepted the nipple-areola complex sparing modified radical mastectomy and desiredto have the best cosmetic results. The patients who received conventional modifiedradical operation during the same period were matched randomly with a ratio of1:1.Statistic data on the local recurrence rate, metastasis rate, survival rate were comparedbetween the two groups. RESULTS: Of the23patients, all were women. The rates oflocal recurrence and metastasis rates were4.3%and4.3%respectively during thefollow-up of5to54months in nipple-areola complex sparing modified radicalmastectomy group with median follow-up time of40month and4.3%and0%respectively in conventional modified radical mastectomy group with medianfollow-up time of36month (P≥0.05). The survival rates in both groups were100%.CONCLUSION: Nipple-areola complex sparing modified radical mastectomy can beapplied to the small-breast patients with early-stage breast cancer and achieve highlevels of patient satisfaction in secondary sexual characteristics.
