These patients were randomly divided into three groups.:blank group did not do anything to relieve the pain; music group used music to alleviate the pain; gum group eased the pain by chewing gum. Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF-MPQ)and Eysenck Personality Questionnaire(EPQ) were adopted to evaluate people’s perception of pain at different time points. The purpose is to find out the effect of music therapy in relieveing pain during orthodontics treatment and the effect comparison with other method.Results:1.Both the music group and the gum group reported significantly less pain than the blank group(p<0.05);statistical analysis of the data showed no significant differences between the music group and the gum group.(p>0.05).2.The changing trends of the pain during orthodontic treatment were similar in the blank, music and gum groups, they all showed that the pain reached peak at h24. Pain scores of the blank group was higher than the music group and the gum group at h2,h6,h12,h24,h48,h72,these differences were statistically significant(p<0.05).3.In blank group, the pain was stronger in the patients with a tendency for introvertion than those with a tendency for extrovertion, statistical analysis of the data show significant differences between them(p<0.05);in music group, the pain degree varies with sexuality, characters of introversional or extroversional trend and emotional stability:the pain was found to be stronger in the females than the males, and the patients with a tendency for introvertion had a significantly higher scores of pain than those with a tendency for extrovertion,as well as the irritability ones felt more obviously in pain than steady-minded.These differences were statistically significant(p<0.05);in gum group, the pain degree varies with characters of introversional or extroversional trend and emotional stability:the patients with a tendency for introvertion had a significantly higher scores of pain than those with a tendency for extrovertion the pain was found to be stronger in the irritability patients than the steady-minded ones (p<0.05).Conclusion:1.Music therapy helps to relieve pain during orthodontics treatment.2.Music therapy and chewing gum have the same effect on relieving the pain during orthodontics treatment.3.Age had no relationship with the effect of music therapy to relieve the pain during orthodontics treatment, the effect in the males is better than females, extroverted personality ones are superior to introversive personality ones, the steady-minded patients are better than irritability ones.
