Swine fever (SF), also called classical swine fever (CSF), is a highly contagious viral disease of pigs, caused by classical swine fever virus (CSFV), featured as multiple hemorrhages and fever. This disease isprevalence in the world and causes important economic losses. It was defined as a list A disease by theOffice International des Epizooties (OIE), and designated as a privileged prevention and control disease by"Long-term animal disease prevention plan (2012-2020)" in china. Therefore, this study investigated theetiology and epidemiology of CSF, which can further promote the prevention and control of CSF inShaanxi Province, and provide theoretical support for long-term animal disease prevention goals. From2008to2012, this study detected22,143and33,923collected serum samples for etiology and immuneantibody of CSF, respectively. Furthermore, we detected the pathogen of clinical onset swine samples. These results provided a reference for prevention and control of CSF in Shaanxi Province. The results ofthis study are the following:1. From2008to2012, we collected22,143serum samples in Shaanxi province, and detect thepresence of CSF pathogen by Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). CSF pathogen was detectedin694samples; the positive rate was3.13%. The results showed that clinically healthy pigs have infectionof CSFV. There is a potential risk of outbreak of CSF.2. We collected173clinical swine samples, and detected CSF pathogen using ELISA and real-timequantitative RT-PCR method. The results showed that the incidence of swine infected with CSF pathogenreached35.84%. The result indicated that CSF is still a major disease hazard pig industry.3. To further analyze the relationship of CSFV infection and immune effect in clinically healthy pigs,we collected33,923serum samples and detected the antibody level using Indirect Hemagglutination Testmethods. The results showed that the overall pass rate of CSF antibody was82.84%, and showed anincreased trend from2008to2012. But there are significant regional differences, Guanzhong four cities(Xi’an, Baoji, Xianyang, Weinan) overall pass rate was the highest, the pass rate in southern Shaanxi threeCities (Hanzhong, Ankang and Shangluo) was the lowest. The results indicated that the area with higherpass rate of antibody has lower CSF pathogen infection rate. Southern Shaanxi areas have a high risk ofoutbreak of CSF.
