The mosque is a place of worship for Muslims, as well as a carrier of Muslim religion, culture and art. Yunnan’s mosque buildings are the product of multi-culture, and they not only embodied with the characteristics of Islam, but also incorporate the elements of traditional Chinese architecture and Yunnan’s ethnic and folk architecture, which differentiates them from both domestic and foreign mosque buildings. All of these have enriched not only Yunnan’s national architectural culture, but also Chinese and Islamic architectural cultures.With the advent of the reform and opening up and the rapid development of economy, the field of architecture also begins its process of modernization, in which Yunnan’s mosque buildings have also undergone a lot of changes that manifest not only as the increase in the Arab style mosques, while decrease in Chinese traditional mosques and folk buildings, but also some changes that occurred more or less in some respects such as the mosque’s layout, decoration and color. In addition to these features, many new elements and development characteristics have also been added to Yunnan’s mosques in the commercialization tide. Are these factors conducive or detrimental? How does Yunnan’s mosque maintain its own cultural essence on the road to modernization? Does the modernization process meet the needs of the Muslims? All these issues are worthy of further study. From the perspective of anthropology of art, this article researches into the characteristics and changes of contemporary Yunnan’s mosque buildings.The first chapter is the introduction, which mainly involves the background, situation and the significance of the research, and further illustrates the key points and difficult points, as well as the research methods. In the second chapter, the author proceeds from the history of the Hui people in Yunnan and the Muslim mosques, and makes a concise analysis; Then the author makes an overview of the distribution characteristics of Yunnan’s mosques, further analyzes their regional characteristics, which can mainly be found as in the mainstream of the combination of Arab style, style of ancient Chinese architecture, the synthesis of Chinese and western style, and some folk and ethnic styles. For example in Yunnan’s " Paxi Dai "," Bai Yi,"" Tibet Hui "and" Bai Hui "(some minorities in Yunnan province) and some other areas the mosques not only have "Islamic" features, but also employ Dai Ganlan style, Yi adobe, Tibetan’s soil room and Bai’s "three wall against one screen" etc.; Finally the author makes a brief analysis of other architecture features of local dwellings embodied in Yunnan’s mosques including " a printing "," three squares with a screen wall "and" three houses with four wings"(some traditional dwellings in Muslim areas in Yunna province. In the third chapter, from the aspects of color, pattern, structure and other mosques in Yunnan province, the author explore the aesthetic features and aesthetic changes it contains from the perspective of aesthetic. In the fourth chapter, according to the current situation of the development of the contemporary mosque in Yunnan province, through interviewing and investigation, the author finds and puts forward some new thesis, and makes some discussions. In the fifth chapter, according to his own knowledge, the author comes up with some his own reflection and advice on current problems.In the process of completing revising paper, the author visited mosques in Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, Yuxi, Honghe and other regions, collecting a large number of literature and pictures on the mosque, and at the same time, taking some related photos. The author also has visited and interviewed some local Hui people, imams, mosque management staff,and some officers of Yunnan Administration for Religious Affairs, Yunnan Islamic institution and Kunming Islamic institution. In addition, the author also used network resources to download several relevant papers and books, went to several school libraries and Yunnan Provincial Library to search for relevant data, which lasted more than a year, and then completed the paper. Although the author tries to search for infallible data to make the paper objective and detailed to the greatest extent, the author understands that his level of knowledge and research ability is limited and the data and argumentation of this paper are inevitable to have negligence in some places so the author hopes that readers can put forward valuable opinions in the process of reading. corrections and criticisms to the paper will enable the author to further correct, supplement and perfect in later study.
