In the background of economic globalization, it is increasingly popular to apply external advantageous resources; consequently, transnational management has become a common practice among the construction projects in China. However, the fact that many of the organizations have not yet well adapted to such a transnational management environment, and especially that they lack emphasis on its communication management, would lead to unsatisfactory efficiency in corresponding management or even make it out of control. Xiamen SM-City’s construction project is one that has typical transnational management features. Although the owner has equipped this project with excellent and professional management team in all areas for smooth project implementation; yet its process is still stagnated due to inadequate attention and understanding upon the transnational communication. This paper aims to study how to effectively establish and execute a transnational communication management system. Moreover, by the findings, it tries to provide some references for the communication management in similar projects in the future. On the basis of management features in construction projects and by integrating the development and the present status of communication management theory, this paper mainly focuses on analysis of the features, existing problems and causes of transnational communication managements in construction projects. Besides, it explores the ways on how to enhance communication effectiveness so as to improve the projects’efficiency. Moreover, this paper, by further studying the existing problems and the causes in Xiamen SM-City’s transnational construction management, aims to improve and optimize the transnational communication system and, meanwhile, to verify effectiveness of communication management.Study of this paper shows that, as for the management team, identification and requirement analysis of the project participants should be conducted when communication management plan is made; and then its communication channels and procedures should also be optimized and adjusted to make them more suitable for transnational management. Regarding the communication problems arising from the project itself, remedial strategies should be taken to overcome communication barriers, promote efficiency as well as ensure effectiveness. Moreover, to ensure sustainable improvement of communication management, methods, such as evaluation of communication performance and effectiveness, should be carried out to execute communication control. Finally, those procedures as well as the results should be standardized and institutionalized, which means this management system of transnational communication will then be executed and valued.
