Sheet metal forming (SMF) is a very important metal forming technology in modernproducts manufacturing. SMF can put pressure on sheet metal by molds and stampingequipment to produce the desired plastic deformation, so that we can obtain the parts to meetvarious shapes.Compared with Cutting Process, SMF has higher production efficiency and can alsoachieve higher material utilization so that it has gotten a very wide range of applications inthe national economy. Particularly in the aerospace, automotive, marine, householdappliances, hardware and other industries, SMF has been an essential main processingmethod. Moreover, the metal processing method of stamping drawing has been widely usedin the field of automobile production.Factors affecting the stamping process will thereby also affect the quality of stampingparts. These factors include material formability, shapes and sizes of sheet metal, moldsurface geometry, process conditions and etc, which are often coupled with each other andmutual restraint. So far, the influence law by the factors hasn’t yet been fully investigated, sothat it’s difficult to quantitatively grasp and effectively control in stamping manufacturing.Thus, during the traditional stamping production, whether it is planning for productionprocesses, process parameters, or determination for mold design, manufacturing materialselection, the shape and size of raw material, etc, we have to go through severalpre-production, debugging and correction in ahead. This process is just trial and errorfixation, resulting in large consumption of human, material and financial resources, highproduction cost as well as long cycle.Now, in the context of economic globalization and world market integration, sheetmetal stamping technology, especially complex piece forming technology (such as carcover), has become one of the representatives of advanced manufacturing technologies. Asthe automotive industry is positioning as a pillar industry of the national economy in majorindustrial developed countries and the emerging industrial countries, as well as the mainindicator of the national industry level, all countries have focused on the studies about theautomotive technologies.According to relevant statistics in recent years, as one of the four car assemblies, the car body has held50-70%of weight and cost of the whole vehicle. Thus, the car body stampingquality largely determines the market share of the new vehicle model.In the entire cycle of automotive design and manufacturing, the forming process designof stamping part and related mold manufacturing level have always been the key elements torestrict the automotive products innovation and quality, and therefore determines the abilityof all countries to develop modern car body. Due to the complex forming surface anddifficult formability of the complex parts, scientists and engineers of all countries havefocused on this worldwide difficult project–sheet metal forming process and quality controlfor complex parts.Overall, studies have shown that the quality control for drawing pieces, not onlyimproves the quality of drawing parts, while also improving the quality of the entire vehicle.
