Virtual assembly based on virtual reality technology is a newly-developed multidisciplinary technology. It is an effective means to improve assembly design and process planning of complex products. With the rapid development of high-speed rail industry, the demand for bogie assembly training is growing in the process of bogie manufacturing, maintenance and teaching. However, traditional modes of bogie assembly training could not fully meet actual demand. Virtual assembly system for EMU bogie will get wide application prospect.Brief introduction on virtual reality technology was given. Domestic and foreign research on virtual assembly based on virtual reality technology was summed up. Based on analysis for EMU bogie structure, demand analysis of virtual assembly system for EMU bogie was carried out. Then development tools and hardware configuration were configured, and system function modules were put forward. Key technology of virtual assembly, model database construction and Virtools programming were researched separately, which laid the foundation for the construction of virtual assembly system for EMU bogie.Based on analysis of CAD assembly model and two methods of obtaining information from CAD assembly model, bogie assembly model was simplified in CATIA and Virtools.Virtual scene created by3ds Max was imported into Virtools and basic interaction operation for models was realized in Virtools. Database of bogie assembly information was established and connected to Virtools, which provided support for assembly process planning and process documentation generation. Assembly path planning, real-time collision detection and dynamic mapping technology were realized in Virtools through programming. Finally, virtual assembly system for EMU bogie was realized by integrating the above functions.The virtual assembly system for EMU bogie can realistically simulate the actual assembly, making up for the defect of lacking interaction in traditional assembly training modes. It can effectively improve training quality and efficiency of EMU bogie and have a broad application value.
