Dam safty monitoring is an important approach which can insure that the dam will work long and well. Not only can it improve the stability and reliability of the dam, but also provide a protective umbrella for the people who are in the downstream of the dam. Recently, the dam monitoring system tends to be built as automatic system. There is some aspect that can be studied deeply for an automatic dam safety monitoring system, especially when a dam monitoring system is in a dreadful situation. It’s very meaningful to improve the automatic level of dam safety monitoring system with new technology.This thesis is based on the application of an automatic dam safety monitoring system. The thesis analyzed the architecture for dam safety monitoring system combined with actual project, and developed an embedded data collector that can collect, store and transmit data monitoring instruments provide. Several aspects the thesis includes are following.(1) Present situation and future trend of dam safety monitoring technology are discussed. Based on the limits of tradition dam monitoring technology and the significance of remote dam safety monitoring system, the thesis elaborate a remote dam safety monitoring system using embedded technology and its advantage.(2) After analyzing the frame of dam safety monitoring system, the whole structural drawing of the dam safety monitoring system was given. The thesis discussed the functional requirement of embedded data collector in dam safety monitoring, cf which the thesis designed the overall designed scheme including software design and hardware design.(3) Modification, pruning and compiling for U-boot and Linux are discussed. U-boot and Linux kernel are both migrated to the hardware platform. Linux driver for LCD1602is written. Yaffs2root file system is made, so embedded Linux system can run right on arm9platform by write file system and kernel into nand flash.(4) the thesis presented in detail the software system of data collector using UML tools, including data collection module, net communication interface, configure and schedule module.Final test showed that the embedded data collector used in dam safety monitoring can collect, store and transfer monitoring data automatically. So the embedded data collector in dam safety monitoring this thesis discussed can suffices requirement of the design.
