Research On Urban Riverfront Design

Urban riverfront landscape is one of the most important parts in the landscape system of thecity. Therefore riverfront area has become a hotspot of city landscape planning and design，whichinvolves regulation of river course，shipping，protection of habitat and animal and plants，urbandesign，public psychology，aesthetics，etc. it has also been closely related to citizens’daily life.This thesis begins with the current situation of how urban riverfront landscape to discuss thepros and cons of the landscape design which can be used to represent local traditional culture，history and regional specialties. This thesis also tries to analyze the issues of city image in theaspect of urban riverfront landscape，as well as landscape presentation，in order to summarize theideas and way of designing the kind of riverfront landscape which could represent andemphasize a city’s character. Hope it can be useful in the future theoretical and practical planningprojects.This thesis has been divided into three parts that consists of five chapters and it is organizedas follows:The first chapter of this dissertation is Introduction. It discusses the background，purpose，content and the ideas of this research.The second chapter of this dissertation provides the general definitions of the relatedconcept and reviewed the history of the relevant research in this field including city image andits’ landscape design, urban riverfront features, types and functions, and analyze principles ofurban riverfront design systematically from various angles.From the beginning of the third chapter，first and foremost, analyzing documents and databased on the second chapter to find current situations at home and abroad，then contrasting andcollecting experience of relative subject, to summarize principles and methods of waterfrontdesign in the city, to make the review for existing problems. It also points out the fact thatbecause of the fast-speed development of modern cities，city images have become indistinct，andcities all look the same. As a result，building up every city’s own and distinguish image by proper urban riverfront planning and design should be emphasized, to provide a preference valuein solving existing problems and making batter design.The fourth chapter is on the basis of chapter two, analyzing elements in urban waterfrontdesign in depth, and summarizes the basic principles of design.The fifth chapter provides urban riverfront landscape case studies to illustrate how to offerecological and localization plans.The sixth chapter is conclusion，after proposing relevant consideration，provides thesummarization of the whole dissertation.
