The collision between tradition and modernity has always been the issue facing urbandevelopment. Under the background of ever-accelerated globalization, local architects are facing agreat challenge in integrating new emerging buildings and traditional buildings. In the process ofglobalization, how to reserve and develop local traditional architectural forms and to create modernarchitectural design with both local cultural characteristics and the spirit of the time is the theme thatmodern architects shall strive to explore.On this background, this thesis analyzes the traditional architectural forms of Yunxi ancienttown and expounds the classification and characteristics of these forms. Based on that, it exploresthe ways and principles of the modern representation of China’s traditional architectural forms.This thesis is divided into six chapters.This first chapter briefly introduces the research background and theoretical development of themodern representation of traditional architectural forms, and this project’s origin, research purpose,significance, and research methods. The second chapter introduces the geographical environment,climatic characteristics and historic changes of Shangjin ancient town. The third chapter, startingfrom the general situation of Shangjin ancient town, gives a brief picture of the town’s spatial form,apparent features and technical characteristics. The fourth chapter classifies the buildings in Shangjinancient town at first, and then expounds the types of the town’s traditional architectural forms bydeeply analyzing each sort of the buildings. The fifth chapter, starting from the ancient town’straditional buildings, tries to explore the methods for the town’s new emerging buildings to inheritthe architectural features and styles of the traditional buildings from every aspect. The sixth chaptergeneralizes the entire article, comes to the conclusion, and proposes future prospects.This thesis does a basic research on how the traditional architectural forms being inherited inthe new emerging building in Shangjin ancient town, Yunxi, Hubei. Through the exploration of theform transformation in modern buildings, it hopes to provide some new approaches and methods tomodern architectural design for creating China’s new architectural culture.
