Many cities have launched public bicycle system or bike-sharing program in recentyears in the sustainable development of urban transport context. Public bicycle systemsare diverse between Europe and North America but advanced both, which could beChinese mirror. The market of public bicycle in China is booming, in spite of hystereticplanning and extensive management. The study of public bicycle system development isnecessary.The origin and development history of public bicycle is recommended in the thesis.The general composition of third generation bike-sharing system is analyzed. Severalfirst-class bike-sharing system servers are introduced and cases in Europe, North America,Taiwan and China are studied.Planning of public bicycle system contains bike-station distribution, bike lanes,bicycle supply and maintenance base. Two ways of bike-station distribution is discussed.We analyze a ratio between bicycle supply and dock.We summarize the operation of bike-sharing system and lay special stress on ratesetting, government regulation, bike redistribution and repair works.Finally, Foshan’s public bicycle system is chosen as case study. Trips by publicbicycle in central urban area are analyzed. There are four different systems in FoshanBecause of large-ministry reform, so that overall planning is missing. The thesis proposesthe development of countermeasures.
