Determination of road network density is the key of the city road traffic planningwork, but the research on how to determine the reasonable road network density isbarely. The dissertation uses a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages ofcurrent specifications for plan and design of urban road traffic, proposes the basicconcept of the standard road network and takes it as a basis to study the road networkdensity.The dissertation starts from the analysis of traffic supply and economic demandfactors affecting the urban road network density as well as the advantages anddisadvantages of interpretation of the existing urban road traffic planning and designspecifications. The dissertation points out the lack of road network densityrequirements on the existing norms, and proposes the concept of the standard roadnetwork accordingly. Then the values of the various elements such as standard roadnetwork cross-section are given. The road network capacity as the key parameters toaccomplish the transformation between the road network and real network arecollected. With the combination of road network capacity calculation model of acertain level of service, the dissertation calculates the conversion indicators betweenthe standard road network and the reality network. After the demarcation of thebalance between supply and demand on the road network capacity and the demand forurban transport, the dissertation establishes the solving model of standard networkdevelopment total mileage in the balance of macro road network capacity and trafficdemand supply. In accordance with the law: each grade road capacity is proportionalto its carrying traffic, the dissertation establishes the standard road network mileagesolving model. Finally, according to the current specification on cross-section settingsof each grade, the dissertation applies translation indicators to obtain the actual roadmileage at all grades. Then the scope of the development of the road network densityis obtained by the definition of the road network density. The dissertation refers toXi’an road and traffic data in2010, and calculates development scale of road networkdensity under different average number of lanes by method of the dissertation proposed above. At last, the method’s feasibility is verified by comparison with thecalculation result and the specification recommended values.
