The spread of Catholicism in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province can be traced back to400years ago, and the establishment of Catholic Archdiocese of Taiyuan has a history of more than one hundred years. So far, there are approximate100churches in the Catholic Archdiocese of Taiyuan, but a part of them have been fell into disuse. Most of them have been rebuilt several times for they have experienced several disastrous historical events, such as the Yihetuan Movement, Gengzi Movement and the Great Cultural Revolution. Thus, most well preserved and huge-scale churches were constructed after the foundation of the establishment of New China, even after the Great Cultural Revolution.From a perspective of Architecture, most researches on the Catholic Archdiocese of Taiyuan are limited to churches built during the period from1848to1949.Researches on churches which ere built after1949are rare. After the implement of religious policies of China, the number of churcheshas been reached a remarkable level. Thus, it is imperative to research modern churches in Taiyuan in a comprehensive and academic way. This article is expected to promote the development of the research of modern churches as well as provide a bibliography to relative studies.Objects of this study of this article are Christianity churches in the Catholic Archdiocese of Taiyuan. In my article, the introduction and summary in term of the location of churches, history of churches, existing Building Condition and architectural feature are illustrated. After that, field researches of8representative examples which are selected are analyzed and discussed deeply. On this basis, churches in Taiyuan are compared with representative churches in metropolises briefly. Finally, characteristics of churches of the Catholic Archdiocese of Taiyuan in terms of architectural form, building materials and structure technique as well as the status of churches in Taiyuan among provinces are discussed.
