Culture is the symbol of social civilization and its passing on is the origin of progress inour society. It is the case of a society, so is a city. Every city is different from others with itsunique charm embedded in its culture. A city’s special cultural characteristics are its inner andeternal charm and are also what makes it different from other cities both internally andexternally. City culture tells the history, the natural geography and the economy and its levelbelonging specially to this city.The gardens in a city are its overcoat. With their decorations, our cities are moregorgeous and charming with various forms and shapes. Meanwhile, we citizens are able toenjoy the nature better and breathe more fresh air, thus lead a more comfortable city life. As aunique art category, city gardening reflects a city’s culture during its construction. However,during that construction process, instead of paying much attention to the protection ofhistorical and cultural relics in a city and the exploration of its culture, many cities are simplya blind copy of others, like Dongxi, an ancient ugly woman, simply imitating the famousancient beauty in China, which results in the opposite effect and gives others a false feeling orworse cause them to take hometown as another city.After recent years’ construction, the gardens in Hengyang has had a great leap inquantity compared with what it used to be, though there is still a great distance from the citygardens in our country, with the green space ratio reaching31.35%in the whole city in2007,green coverage up to36.24%and the average public green space reaching7.82square metersper capita. Delighted as we are with the accomplishment, we are clear there aren’t manyhighlights in Hengyang gardens and their quality and taste are not high. Such is theconflicting reality of Hengyang gardens. So my aim of writing this thesis is to find a way toexplore deep into the city’s culture and build unique city gardens according to the cityculture.As an important political, economical and cultural center in history, Hengyang city is ofprofound cultural heritage. The city culture of Hengyang is not only extensive and deep butalso very inclusive, and has become a special scenery of this city, and among those cultures, the Wild Goose Culture, the Academy Culture, the Chuanshan Culture, Religion Culture,Anti-war culture, and Farming Culture are worth mentioning the most. On the green spaceconstruction of city garden, this thesis holds that on the basis of “two rings, threeribbons—one axle, two wings, five wedges, six garden areas and seven corridors”, we willpay great attention to a city’s culture in building city gardens and build unique gardens ofHengyang City.The author will enhance the featuristic construction of the gardens in Hengyang Cityfrom the following six aspects.First, to build landmark features of gardens in Hengyang City with geese culture guidingthe constuction of Huiyan(geese returning) Peak Scenery. Hengyan got its nickname “geesecity” from Huiyan Peak, from which we can see the role Huiyan Peak Scenery plays ingardens of Hengyang City. But the original Huiyan Peak Scenry is small in size and not grandenough to show the remarkable geese flying pose. Speeding the construction of Huiyan PeakScenery is not only a need of greening the downtown area but also of improving the landmarkcontruction of this city. Through the construction of geese image, it is good for the wild geesespirit fully entering people’s heart.Second, to build the “famous Anti-war City feature” of gardens in Hengyang City withAnti-War Culture guiding the consruction of an Anti-War Memorial City.Hengyang is the only city formally named as a famous anti-war city in our country and it hasleft an indelible historic marks in the history of Chinese people getting deliverance andliberation. We defines it as our city culture to spread the spirit of sacrifice for the cause ofjustice and encourage the later generations to fight for a stronger China which would not beinvaded by others. While constructing the Anti-war Memorial City, we should emphasize aserious and solemn atmosphere using advanced technologies like videos, light and electric toreplay the fierce and heroic scenes of Hengyang Protection War and also add patroticelements in it.Third, to build academic feature of gardens in Hengyang City taking Academy Cultureas a guide for the recontruction of Chuanshan Academy.“Of all the acedemies in history, ChuDynasty has the most common ones. While among all the Academies in Chu Dynasty,Heng(Hengyang) has the most.” Popular academy education was a key reason why thereIV were so many talents in Hengyang generation after generation. Although Shigu Academy inHengyang has been renewed, Chuanshan Academy, as a crucial representative of HunanCulture, is still ruins. Recontructing Chuanshan Academy speedily bears special meaning inbuilding the acedemic feature of gardens in Hengyang City.Fourth, to build the city civilization deep roots feature of gardens in Hengyang Cityusing argricultural culture to direct the construction of Agricultural Culture Museum.According to the available historical records, Hengyang people lived on agriculture. With thelong history of cultivating the land, Hengyang has rich argricultural civilization and itsargriculture can best reflect its historical and social development. Take Shenlong and Cailunfor examples. The formal created Leiyang, while the latter invented paper. They are wellknown and every Hengyang citizen feels proud of them. By building agricultural museum inHengyang to show our ancestors’s widsom, we can enlarge Hengyang’s visibility as well asencourage the citizens to take part in the creation ensuthiastically.Fifth, to build the tourist city feature of gardens in Hengyang City taking advantages ofreligious culture to improve the quality of Nanyue Tourism. Nanyue is a name card of tourismin Hengyang and religion is a tourist feature of it. Because of lacking profound developmentin Nanyue Tourism, the quality of Nanyue Tourism is difficult to improve. Thus, to integratethe religious culture into the developmemt of Nan Tourism is the only way to boast the touristresources in Nanyue. Meanwhile, the tourist infrustuctures as well as its visibility andreputation also needs perfection.Sixth, to improve the overall quality of gardens in Hengyang City by emphasizing theconstruction of city statues. City statues greatly embody the city culture and also the mostsignificant body of city spirit. However, there are problems in the construction of statues inHengyang such as lack in number, low quality and dull creation. According to the city cultureof Hengyang, the city statues in Hengyang should take geese groups statues, historicpersonalities statues and agricultural modals as its main body and introduce some statues withmeanings of free thinking and iniatives for better life. All those changes aim at improving theimage of city gardens.
