In this paper, the optimal designs of residential steel structures were carried out. The purpose of the paper was to develop an optimal software for residential structure according to the current structure design codes on the finite element software ANSYS platform and to apply the developed software to optimize a6-story and a24-story residential steel structures.In this paper, we studied the distribution characteristics of the H-shaped steel beams in the residential steel structure, and provided a plan for optimizing the H-shaped steel beams which occupied large proportion in the entire structure to achieve the rapid optimization for the entire structure. Combined with the actual operation method of the ANSYS optimization module, we gave the corresponding optimization algorithm. Then, we gave the constraint conditions of deformation and internal force for the composite beam structure, based on the Chinese Structure Design Code. The model and load information of the6-story and24-story residential steel structure was summed up to do the preparations for the optimal design. Finally, we utilized the APDL programming language provided by the ANSYS software to carry out parametric modeling, and added the constraint conditions of deformation and internal force into the computer program, and we obtained the optimal results of the6-story and24-story residential steel structure.Comparing with the initial design, the optimized steel amount for the6-story residential steel structure was about27.3to30.4percent of the total steel amount, and7.2to8.4percent of the total steel amount for the24-story residential steel structure. The optimal results achieved considerable economic benefits.By using the optimal software developed by us for the structure design of residential steel structure, we can improve the design level, design quality, and make more economic benefits.
