| vResiding has always been occupying a very important position in Chinese people’s hearts since the ancient times. With the transformation from planned economy to market economy in our country’s economic system, people’s idea on houses also develops from "owning a house" to " optimizing a house". The fast development of real estate makes the type of residence tend to become diverse, and also makes our requirements towards houses increasingly higher. Changes in the level and concept of consumption lead people to pursuing a higher mental quality. Although residential design ought to embody the owner’s personality, following old routines and copying each other has, to some extent, limited individualized design in residences.Beginning with the influence of spiritual needs on individualized design in houses, this thesis introduces that the change in consumption concept has lifted people’s more spiritual needs, as well as the effect of different aesthetic tastes on residential design. It analyzes the factors which affect individualized design in residences in terms of the two points above. Then, this thesis discusses the reasons for restricting individualized design. Besides, based on the study of the content above, it manages to find the ways and solutions to the problems in terms of mass psychology, the factors of interior designers and the structural features of residential space. Lastly, it makes a exposition upon how to build diverse and individualized houses which comply with the owners’ identity and characteristic.Individualized design in residences is an inevitable trend in the development of residential planning. Based on the idea of "people oriented", people hold the view that "designing houses is designing their life". Awareness of creativity is indispensible in planning houses, because creativity is the soul of design. Planning a house without individualization means lack of awareness of creativity. In the meantime, the guiding role of interior designers can be significant. The author of this thesis just makes an exposition in terms of he himself upon the elements that currently restrict the personalized design in residences, as well as summarizes these elements. Therefore, it is not a critical essay.
