In the1960s, the concept of Citizen Participation occurred in western centuries andcontinued to develop. During that period, urban planning and construction was effectivelypromoted, and this new idea also had a positive impact on people’s awareness of democracy. This concept was led into China in the late1980s. With the development of Chinese societies,in recent years, citizen participation plays more and more important roles in urban planning anddesign. However, due to various reasons, it still has difficulties applying the idea into concretepractice.Currently, the community landscape design in our century still follows a top-down model, which is, based on the subjective will of designers and management departments. This pattern, however, would easily cause the outcome difficult to meet the real needs of public. In this thesis, with analysis of the whole process, citizen participation is divided into sixaspects as induced participation, current situation investigation, needs exploration, co-design,implementation and developing maintenance, according to the time line of participation. In eachaspect, definition、importance、main idea and conclusion of citizen participation are represented.Combined with case study and hands-on experience, design principle、elements and methods ofthe aspect design of citizen participation in the area of community landscape improvement arediscussed. Finally, the theory and methodology of the aspect design of citizen participation areproposed.Combined with St.Mary’s Community Center outdoor environmental-improvement projectof city Dundee of Great Britain, the aspect design of citizen participation is put into practice.Design principles and methods are also presented within the research process. The successful implementation illustrates that the aspect design of citizen participation isessential for effective citizen participation. Hopefully, the content in this paper could bebeneficial to further research on Chinese community landscape improvement.
