At the period of Ming and Qing Dynasties,with the prosperity of commodityeconomy,the Pearl River Delta cities development was also very unique,highlightlyappears the rising of towns and the expansion of the neighbourhood at the outside ofthe city’s wall. Samshui locates the west of the Pearal River Delta,where the West andthe North River meet.At the year of1526, Samshui was founded and constructedwalls on the Longfenggang,until the city’s address relocated the town of Sainam in theyear of1945.Amony in the four hundred years,the urbans’development patternevolved several times,which process of development had both common and it’sspecial characteristics.On the basis of fully collecting local history books, Customs information,Ancient maps, using the theories methods of Historical Geography, Urban Geography,Cartography, Literature Subject, this paper makes a preliminary study of the SamShuiurban during1526-1945.This paper is divided into three parts. The main body includes Five chapters.The first chapter mainly relying on old topography, investigates the historical andGeography factors of affecting the urban’s development, particularly the terrain andriver factors. The second chapter fully using of the maps in the Customs materials,researches external morphology of the Samshui and puts forward questions of the oldtopography. The third chapter studies the blocks’ location and the expanding ofSamshui, at the same time, studies the forming of the Railway blocks. The fourthchapter using the methods of history, philology, cartography, disserts the functionzonings in the wall and resolves the contradiction of the historical records. The fifthchapter using the theory of center, investigates the centers location, degree anddevelopment, further, studies the pattern of the urban systems in different historicalperiods. The sixth chapter studies the Sainam, the important town in Samshui. Adding,studies the aqueduct downstream of Samshui at the end of Qing Dynasty.By means of researching the development of Samshui urban during1526-1945,the author expects push forward the research of urbans at the pearl River Delta, meantime, hopes offering consults for the development of Samshui nowadays, inorder to play the useful roll of the Historical Geography.
