As a kind of textile material, bamboo fiber includes natural bamboo fiber and recycled bamboo fiber. On one hand, bamboo fiber has outstanding advantages. On the other hand, there are fake bamboo fiber made of ramie and common viscose. As a result, the bamboo fiber market suffers impact. Therefore, it is necessary to study the properties and differentiation of bamboo fiber.This paper studied properties of bamboo fiber by several test methods and find out the suitable distinguishing methods. The following content is included.1. Because the chemical composition and fiber structure of bamboo are not completely the same as that of ramie, a study of ramie, unknown "bamboo fiber", natural bamboo fiber etc was made including infrared spectrum test, GC-MS (Gas chromatograph & Mass spectrometer), cellulose average degree of polymerization test, and color reaction etc. According to the experiments, the infrared spectrum of unknown "bamboo fiber" and oxidizing degummed ramie are almost the same. Unknown "bamboo fiber" has 50% chemical composition is the same as that of oxidizing degummed ramie. In addition, unknown "bamboo fiber" and oxidizing degummed ramie has similar cellulose average degree of polymerization and color reaction. According to above, unknown "bamboo fiber" is modified ramie, not natural bamboo fiber.Suggested method is that distinguishing the fiber with both infrared spectrum test and GC-MS.2. Compared the chemical composition, cellulose average degree of polymerization, dissolving property etc of recycled bamboo fiber and common viscose. According to experiments, the peak which stands for—OH is obviously weaker in the infrared spectrum of recycled bamboo fiber than that of common viscose. Cellulose average degree of polymerization of common viscose is smaller than that of recycled bamboo fiber. The density of recycled bamboo fiber is smaller than that of common viscose. Different from recycled bamboo fiber and recycled wood fiber, there is a peak at about 25°in the X-ray diffraction spectrum of recycled cotton fiber. Recycled bamboo fiber and recycled wood fiber dissolve in sulphuric acid, while recycled cotton fiber does not. Solution in which dissolved different fibers has different viscosity.Suggested method is that distinguishing recycled bamboo fiber by dissolving it, analyze the viscosity of solution quantitatively, and find out the relationship between the kind of fiber and the viscosity of solution.3. Suitable viscosity of solution and consistency of sulphuric acid are chosen on the basis of numerous experiments. Then a relationship was got between the kind of fiber and the viscosity of solution. In the end, several typical percentages of the mixed fibers were chosen to check the relationship.The result is that the dissolving method in distinguishing recycled bamboo fiber is effective. The relationship between the kind of fiber and the viscosity of solution is right and stable in a certain error limit.
