This paper select settlement as the breakthrough point, ensure settlements in sandy ecological security as the goal, select the sandy area in the north of Yanchi County, Ningxia province as a case. The ecological security evaluation system towards settelments of the sandy area was built according to the sand disaster system theory. Then with the use of land use data in2012, the ecological security evaluation of the settlement was carried out. The ecological security pattern of settlements in sandy area was built based on the minimum cumulative resistance models. Aiming to provide some advice and reference to promote and protect the ecological security of settlement in sandy area, give a guide to reasonable use of the land, and provide scientific basis to achieve regional social, economic and sustainable development of the ecological environment. Simultaneously exploring and researching on research methods on settlement in sandy ecological security to explore and research, provide a foundation for future studies of ecological safety in sand area.The main contents and conclusions of the paper are as follows:(1) Under the guidance of sand disaster system theory, the ecological evaluation index system of the sandy area settlements was built. The evaluation system consistes of6evaluation factors, that is soil type, soil organic carbon content, vegetation coverage, the location of vegetation between settlement and sand land and so on.(2) The results of ecological security evaluation of settlements in the sandy area show that there are286settlements in the study area, among which102settlements are safe and accounting for35.7%of the total settlements,184settlements are dangerous accounting for64.3%of the total settlements. About half of dangerous settlements are in moderate danger or above. So it needs to improve the ecological security of the settlements in sandy area and corresponding ecological safety protection measures should be taken.(3) Combined with the regional ecological security pattern with the settlemental ecological security pattern, the ecological security pattern of settlements in sandyarea was built, it includes ecological protection zone, ecological control area and general ecological zone. The regional ecological security pattern in sandy area includes the pattern with sandy land as sources, the pattern with management area in the core, the pattern that all the land under management and control, the pattern with control in the periphery and the patterm with protection in the periphery; the settlement ecological security pattern is divided into strict control area, management and control area and control area.(4) Combination of ecological evaluation results and settlements in sandy ecological security pattern, respectively from the area and the settlements, the two points of view put forward the corresponding ecological measures. In region, Ensuring of land use types in the ecological protection zone without changing, take the appropriate control measures for different treatment areas in region.
