Study And Application Of Nostalgic Elements In Womenswear Design

Nostalgic phenomenon is quite prevalent in contemporary fashiondesign. The prevalence of fashion design is correlated to the varianceof economy, polity, society and culture. Studying on this theme can tosome extent evoke public concern about historical culture. Vogue hasn’tto be antithetical to nostalgia. In other words, they could evolvetogether in many occasions. Studying on nostalgia means studying on vogueas well. As a specific design element, nostalgia has been studied rarely.The induction of nostalgic elements can help designers get a better graspof elemental traits. The public is lack of spiritual ballast incontemporary society, and the applying of nostalgic elemental traits todesign works can alleviate their psychic vacancy.The elaboration of nostalgic fashion traits is employed in thefollowing sequence from theoretical analysis to design practice. Firstly,nostalgic fashion can be reflected on culture, theme and element facetsspecifically, which is not only a fashionable trend but also a design themeas well as a specific design element. Meanwhile, the differences betweennostalgia and vintage are specified at the level of time and thought.Secondly, nostalgic elements are classified in part, pattern and singlecategories specifically. After analyzing the historical overview anddesign traits of representative design elements in each category, wesummarize the new traits of these representative elements in contemporarydesign background as silhouette design, part design and pattern design.Furthermore, we specify these three design styles.Finally, the designpractice of nostalgic elements is based on the theme of China’s1980s.The nostalgic elements in this period can be classified in single, color,accessory and adornment category. These elements have gained someinnovation in contemporary design and can be analyzed from silhouette,color, pattern and adornment specifically. According to these design elements, we sketch out two series of effect drawings, from which we chooseone for manufacturing and exhibition.Through categorical induction of these nostalgic elements, back traceof historical overview and analysis of contemporary design traits, we havegained comprehensive knowledge about nostalgic elements traits whetherin new or old forms. As a result, we can undertake our fashion design inaccordance with the perspective of fashion design. This paper means toconnect elements, history and fashion and form a comparative way of designwith respect to ancient versus contemporary times.
