Abstract/Summary:
Recycling and recurrence are the eternal themes of fashion. According to Roland Barthes:' Every new fashion is a refusal to inherit, a subversion against the oppression of the preceding fashion.'The wheels of fashion move on in the process of insistent self-subversion and renovation. Vintage and retro, which are both the results and the momentum of changes in style, are the vital topics whenever we talk about fashion.'Fashion'is not a isolated concept. There is a intimate connection between the emergence, development or decease of the trends in fashion and the social and cultural forces of their times. There is broad agreement that cycles of fashion have accelerated rapidly since the nineteenth century, especially over the last fifty years. Not only the classical vintage styles reborn in a new way, but also the styles and looks of20th Century keep appearing in today's fashion show. Attentive observation on the international fashion news in recent years suggests that the vintage and retro has become one of the influential trends in the fashion world.The1960s which is a period full of rebellion, passion and creativity, has seen the birth of various characteristic styles and looks of fashion design in this decade. The events of western society from mod culture, rock&roll and the hippie movement to the pop art, op art and abstract art, have brought lots of fresh blood to fashion in1960s. Similarly, although China is extremely deprive comparing to the western world, the1960s of China is also a turbulent and passionate period, in which a romantic mood of revolution sustained. On account of the special historical background, plenty of unique and symbolic images come to existence. All these'elements of past' continuously stimulate the inspiration of fashion designers nowadays, for the application of no matter silhouette, style, color, pattern or fabric. In order to conduct a reliable research on the application of vintage style and vintage elements in fashion design, this thesis analyze and summarize the basic methods, which are imitation, restructuring and mixture, base on a survey and research on both international fashion shows and Chinese market of women clothing. Generally speaking, although fashion designers tend to choose different styles according to the specific market orientation, style and theme, their design methods have a lot in common. The3methods which list in the thesis can be varied and extended into brunches and combinations of new methods, in order to provide more creativity for vintage fashion design. In addition, this thesis especially analyze the application of vintage fashion elements in Chinese women clothing market, taking the60s retro and vintage style design in the international fashion world as a reference. Due to the differences between the Chinese and western cultural backgrounds, the western vintage fashion elements seem to be unfamiliar to Chinese customers. On the other hand, Chinese brands take insufficient advantage of60s retro and vintage fashion elements. Consequently, all these reasons lead to a weaker trend of vintage and retro style in china than in the west. For this reason, this thesis attempts to pave the way for the vintage fashion design in china, through the endeavor to research on a broad cultural vision and analyze in a detailed way.
