Nowadays, with the emergence of renewable energies, coal energy will still stay as the main power energy for producing electricity in a long term. However, the spatial distribution of Chinese coal resources and electricity demand causes the long-distance transportation problem of our coal-electricity system.This paper focuses on the long-distance transportation issue.The Geographic Information System (GIS) is used to manage all the spatial data because this whole paper is based on the distribution of Chinese coal-electricity system.By aggregating the spatial data of coal resources and electricity demand in China, this paper identifies several“coal centers" and "demand centers", which provides a quantitative method for measure the distance in coal-electricity system. This study also provides an analysis of optimal pathof the current coal transportation system. By using scenario analysis, this paper further looks at the cost, the electricity supply capacity and the emission of carbon dioxide in three scenes (remote coal transportation scene, electricity transportation by using ultra high voltage (UHV) and the mixture of these two). And in the end of this paper, depending on the estimation, some suggestions will be given to the development of new technology (UHV) under the stimulation of China.
