Manufacturing industry is the pillar of a nation’ s economy as it providesproduction means and equipments for different departments of a country. CNC takesup an increasingly significant place in m odern manufacturing technology. It has adirect influence on a country’ s economic development, overall national strength andinternational strategic status. The advan ced laser manufacturi ng and processing skilllargely pushes forward the overall m anufacturing technology. Developed andadvanced developing countries regard it as an im portant m eans of i mprovingproduction efficiency and international competition capacity. STEP-NC is a new typeof data exchange standard proposed by developed western countries. It is an extensionof STEP technology in CNC technology, which is widely accepted and used am ongcountries. The use of S TEP-NC will substantially improve the intelligent capacity ofCNC system; therefore, developing laser cutting CNC technology based on STEP-NCbecomes increasingly crucial.Integrated with sta te-of-the-art research in laser processing and programm ing,and laser cutting features, this article brings forward an overall designing programbased on STEP-NC laser cutting CNC system. It introduces laser cutting CNC systemin the basis of STEP-NC and gives a t horough study of the m ajor hardware and keytechnology of laser cutting m achine. It finally constructs a hardware system aticstructure, centered on PMAC motion control.With regards to the software systematic structure based on STEP-NC, the articledeveloped a new STEP-NC CNC system which includes the overall software structureand the con tents of each part. It elaborates the application of m otion control m odel,the calculating theory of laser cutting and designs a new set of operation interface. Italso accomplishes the success of produci ng a m odeling design, including decodingmode, recognition module, processing and planning module, laser cuttin g parametersetting module and output module of STEP-NC.Concerning the overall structure of emulation laser cu tting system, this articlegives a detailed explanation of the functions and designing methods of user interfacemodule, laser cutting param eter setting m odule, im age e mulation m odule a nd database managing module. It finishes designing CNC emulation system interface andmenu. Through laser cutting, it conducts te sts of the function, in troduces theprocedures and finally proves that m achinery parts based on STEP-NC laser cutti ngsystem can fully m eet the needs of the clients. Last co mes to the summary andexpectations, which states the contribution and innovation of this article and tries togive the direction of the future research.
