Since1949, the farming landscape has dramatically changed in many rural communities in the north of China. In this paper, basing on a case study on a rural community of the loess hill, the observation and analysis of nearly60years of rural communities landscape changes of typical fanning, crop planting pattern changes, different stages of policy under the influence of the farming landscape characteristics analysis and study of this area on the agricultural sustainable development.This paper, by using the Participatory Rural Appraisal(PRA) technology based on semi-structured interviews, and the analysis of local knowledge from space on the Participatory Geographic Information System(PGIS), mining farming landscape in different periods of the farmers in the memory, the social science combined with geography method, to accurately grasp the local farming landscape purposes. During60years, according to the political background of the era this research is divided into5periods, with large scale of orthophoto map, discussing with the villagers, were determined at different period of the land use condition, the main farming, farming characteristics and typical crop planting pattern changes and villagers living conditions information.Based on investigation and analysis of the period of agricultural landscape, the agricultural landscape change analysis, and from the aspects of sustainable farming and evaluation, taking the sustainable development as a series of index as well as the raw data of these indicators based on these data, the standard treatment, and the use of AHP according to the index system of the different importance weights, then use the comprehensive evaluation method is analyzed and evaluated from the aspects of social, economic and ecological environment. The results indicated that:the changing history of farming landscape in the past60years was the history that China’s traditional farming landscape was being turned into Western’s modernization agro-landscape quickly as well as gradually. Although the degree of agricultural intensive management and level of agricultural productivity has improved obviously, these attempts couldn’t totally meet the needs of sustainable development for farming landscape in rural communities of China. We should pay more attentions on the field.
