The eco-city design through introducing ecological approach, emphasizing thecoordinated development between man and nature, man and society, becomes theinevitable trend of future development of urban design. However, in practical process,due to the lack of effective ecological analysis and formulation, no rational andscientific support and program evaluation system and guarantee mechanism’simperfection, ecological urban design concept was eventually reduced to"eco-gimmick". GIS (geographic information system) technology combines thecomputer graphics and attribute database and realizes the combination of spatial dataand attribute data. It takes advantage of its powerful spatial analysis capabilities and3Dsimulation capabilities, providing designers a very effective space analysis tools anddecision support tools. It can make emotional ecological concepts in spatial entitiesquantitative analysis to improve the scientific and the implementation of the urbandesign program.Combing ecological urban design at home and abroad and summing up theideological origins of the concept of ecological urban design, as well as the coresubstance. Compared with traditional urban design, summarizes the designcharacteristics of the eco-city, the reality of the plight of ecological urban designpractice process and objective discourse. According to the ecological objectives inplanning theory, principles, characteristics and methods, combined with the traditionalpractice of urban design process, summarize five stages of the ecological urban designpractice process-the preliminary study stage, the program design phase, the programreview stage, the implementation of the implementation phase as well as the operationof the maintenance phase. Taking the ecological urban design practice process as themain line, aiming at the problems rising at every stage in the process of practice,providing the corresponding specific solutions based on GIS technology. Based on theunique advantages of the method of GIS technology, this paper aims to sort out theframework of GIS technology in various stages in the process of ecological urbandesign practice.At the preliminary study stage, taking advantage of the powerful data processingand mapping functions of GIS, the traditional problems of data acquisition andpresentation of the problem can be solved effectively so as to lay a solid foundation forthe expansion of the whole process for the eco-city design. Based on the powerfulspatial analysis capabilities of GIS, to realize analysis and assessment of ecologicalconditions and establish basic norms of ecological priority. At the design stage, based onGIS-related technical means and GIS technology practices, it can assist decision-makingstructure of the core content of the five areas: urban space design, land use functional design, the landscape form design, green transportation design and infrastructure design.In the program evaluation stage, using GIS techniques, to establish quantitativeassessment system and this is an important basis for decision making of the assessmentof the ecological urban design program. In the phase of the implementation of theoperational program, taking advantages of GIS technology means to establish theimplementation of the project library, public participation in the platform and dynamicexercise supervision platform so as to ensure the sustainable development of ecologicalurban design.
