With Chinese banking industry fully opening to the outside world and quickening its pace to marketization, the banking industry is experiencing an increasingly fierce competition. While international settlement business, as an important source of income in banking intermediary business, is becoming the priority of the rivalry. ICBC, the world first commercial bank,is also boosting widely its tactics of globalization, international settlement business occupying a crucial position. However, as for the overall development of the international settlement business, Bank of China, being the first professional bank to do foreign exchange business domestically, always ranks the first in international business market share and becomes the target of ICBC. This thesis takes Taian Branch of ICBC as an example, together with its actual situation, to analyse how ICBC deals with recent fierce competition. ICBC takes a serials of measures to promote its international business market position, surpassing the Bank of China to be the first in the international business market.The Taian Branch of ICBC should choose differentiation strategy as its international business development tactic, whose basic idea is to make full use of the staffs, technology advantages and centralized operation so as to lead the competitors in quality, service, features and functions. Meanwhile, this strategy may have more advantages than the tactic of simply pursuing low cost, as it can vacate more marketing staffs to conduct the promotions of products and businesses better. The differentiation becomes necessary because of the market diversity and many customers are sensitive to the service quality and the efficiency of business processing. ICBC, as the largest and the most profitable commercial bank in our country, tries to create the first-class international bank. In order to provide powerful support to its customer business development and create a international first-class bank for trade and financial service, it should give full play to its competitive advantage of trade and finance service business in such aspects as brand, channel, product and technology, improve its innovative ability, grasp the chance for business development and come up with customized project with high efficiency and comprehensive trade service. This thesis is of theoretical and practical importance to the sustainable, rapid and healthy development of Taian Branch of ICBC.
