Border trade refers to relevant exchange activities of goods or services between specific adjacent or similar regions, areas and countries. Judged from a functional perspective, border trade has an irreplaceable role in the following aspects:to promote the economic development of ethnic minority border areas; to promote the sharing, exploitation, development of resources so as to create and friendly neighbor relations; to promote the economic and technological exchanges at home and abroad, to open up new export markets and foreign trade channels, to promote the opening of inland border ports.Firstly, this paper reviewed the theoretical basis of the Sino-Mongolian border trade. At the same time, both positive and the negative factors of Sino-Mongolian border trade were summarized. Secondly, development process, present situation and problems of Sino-Mongolian border trade were discussed at length. Finally, with aid of related theories, this paper put forward some countermeasures and suggestions for the optimization of Sino-Mongolian border trade.The conclusions of this paper could be listed as following.(1) Convenient conditions of Sino-Mongolian border trade were brought by natural environment, social environment and trade policy environment. At the same time, there is a big gap in Sino-Mongolian border trade because of differences of national governance, overall composition of nationalities, economic development mode and so on.(2) At the beginning of the twentieth Century, Sino-Mongolian border trade witnessed quick development of total scale. The scale of it increased11.1times in about ten years. However, single prominent of commodity structure could be obviously found.(3) There were a series of in Sino-Mongolian border trade such as low scale, adverse policy impact, poor base infrastructure and strong discontent of both Chinese and Mongolian businessmen.
