| Family business, being the most universal form of business all over the world,has an unshakable status in the world economy. In China, family business has been asignificant force in the national economy after booming for nearly thirty years.However, most family firms are short-lived and are doomed to failure within threegenerations, which is the curse of the family business in China. In the coming five orten years, family business in China will reach its peak period of inheritance, and mostfamily businesses will follow the traditional mode and be passed down from father toson in the intergenerational transition. Thus, this paper targets the family business asthe research object, and probes into the intergenerational transition from theperspective of the successor. On the basis of literature review, the paper explores theinfluential factors of succeeding motivation in the successors by empirical methods.Twelve research hypotheses are proposed in this paper. Questionnaires aredesigned and research objects are chosen.188questionnaires are given out with164effective ones back. Statistical software, SPSS19.0, is adopted in data processing toconduct reliability and validity analysis. Factor analysis, correlation analysis andregression analysis are carried out to test and verify the hypotheses proposed.The research findings show:(1) offspring’s interest in family firms, advantagesand prospect of family business, and expectations from parents affect succeedingmotivation positively, among which offspring’s interest in family firms has thegreatest positive effect.(2) Offspring’s interest in non-family firms, problems andcrises of family firms, family conflict, and employment chances in the market affectsucceeding motivation negatively.Meanwhile, a series of background variables affect the succeeding motivation aswell. The research shows that the male’s succeeding motivation is higher than that ofthe female, and the only child’s succeeding motivation is higher than that of childrenwith siblings. Bigger firms with higher capital lead to higher succeeding motivation. |
