As far as to the study of leadership theory, most scholars focus on the positiveleadership and its effect, however this paper developed a study on a kind of negativeleadership, abusive supervision which means the supervisors treat their subordinates ina hostile way but with no physical contact, such as threat, menace, abuse, indifferenceand sarcasm. Abusive supervision was introduced from abroad and rarely discussed athome, but it often occurs in the real society and it is worth study and contemplation. Most research about abusive supervision stands on the point of organizational justice, work value and ingratiation behaviors, there lacks research on the effect of abusivesupervision with subordinates’ emotional quotient as a moderating variable in thecontext of Chinese companies. In line with the Emotion Control Model of Gross (1988),subordinate with a higher EQ would better know how to regulate and express his ownemotion; therefore subordinates with different levels of EQ would perform differentfeedback to the same kind of abusive supervision. This paper summarized the theories of abusive supervision, emotional quotient andeffect of leadership, compared different relating concepts and described the recent statusof contemporary studies. Then it proposed an analytical model on the effect of abusivesupervision on the basis of subordinates’ emotional quotient. Relating hypotheses wereraised and verified with the conclusion that abusive supervision exerts a negative effecton the work attitude and performance of the subordinates, but emotional quotient couldprominently alleviate such negative effect. From both theory and imperial research, thispaper reveals that abusive supervision jeopardizes the subordinates and the organization, meanwhile the higher subordinates EQ, the more alleviation it releases. To a certainextent, the paper carries realistic inspirations. This research was supported by National Science Foundation of China(Grant NO. NSFC70972025) renamed under Consequence and ResponsiveMeasures of Abusive Supervision—A Multilayer Study.
