In recent decades, enterprise evolution theory has been developed fast in Western academic fields, organizational ecology is an essential part of which. During the developing steps, organizational ecology has absorbed and derived from the other vital organizational theories, it focus on environmental selection process, such as organizational founding and disbanding, as well as organizational additional process, and the population ecology of organization theory mainly research on the level of organizational population.This thesis employs the the industrial census data for1995and economic census data for2004, sorts out the statistics about the enterprises in1995survived the2004, divides the sample into558cells (each cell can namely an organizational population) in accordance with the enterprise’s industry and provincial-level location. From the angle of organizational ecology, it aims at finding evolutional law, industry and regional distribution of China’s organizational population during the overall development from1995to2004, moreover, exploring the micro affecting factors and macro affecting factors of the vital rates of the organizational population. The main research outcomes are:(1) The number, changes and vital rate of organizational populations are all quite different from industries and locations of organizations.(2) The organizational population with higher average age of enterprises, higher average cost of enterprise and the greater of average net profit, have the higher vital rate; while, the larger proportion of the non-public economy in the organizational population, the lower vital rate.(3) The inverted U-shaped relationship of competitive density and vital rate has not been supported; the positive impact of per capita GDP on the vital rate of organizational population has not been supported, while, the outcome supports that if the organizational population is located at municipality, its vital rate will be higher, and we did not find the cognitive impact of state-owned enterprise restructuring on vital rate of state-owned enterprises.
