Due to the extensive mode of economic growth in China’s urban areas, there has long been a serious waste in the use of various resources, which is particularly true for the use of land resources as the material base for urban development. The rigid constraints imposed by the limited supply of urban land resources require us to pursue a sustainable mode of urbanization via improving the efficiency of land use, to wit, using land in a scientific and intensive manner, instead of blindly and hastily developing cities through expansion and extension. Since the focal point of urban development is put on the industrial restructuring, the structure of land use spatially reflects the industrial structure of a city. On one hand, changes in industrial structure will mold shifts in land use structure; On the other hand, the latter can also exert a direct impact on industrial restructuring, hence the interdependent relations between industrial growth and land use. Therefore, we are confronted with the major tasks to scientifically allocate limited land resources to different industries so as to coordinate environmental, economic and social development, to integrate optimizing land use structure and industrial restructuring, and to make the overall planning of urban land utilization as a means of macro economic regulation so as to balance the development of all sectors in national economy. As a matter of fact, the relationship between urban land utilization and industrial structure is bilateral and involves multiple factors. However, most of the current studies only recognize their unilateral relationship from a single perspective. The thesis investigated the development of Liuzhou city, a typical heavy industrial base in Southwest China from the approach of the inter-relations between urban land utilization and industrial structure. Drawing on theories from urban economics, land economics and industrial economics and the econometric approach, the study worked out the laws that govern the transformations of land utilization and industrial structure in Liuzhou city through collecting and analyzing the figures related to land use and industrial growth of the city from2000to2010. Based on these laws, the study discussed the interactive relations between land use and industrial structure and proposed suggestions for the optimization and coordinated development of land utilization and industrial structure in Liuzhou cityMajor findings are concluded as below:First of all, the transformations in industrial structure and land use of Liuzhou city can be summarized below. In terms of changes in industrial structure, Liuzhou is undergoing rapid growth in industrial medium term. The proportion of secondary industry increases while that of tertiary industry decreases; though the overall productivity improves, comparative productivity of secondary industry is on the rise while that of tertiary industry on the decline, and the former always has a lead over the latter, which means that the dominant industrial structure of Liuzhou is a "secondary-tertiary" mode. The employment structure is not in line with the output value structure of secondary and tertiary industries in that recessive unemployment can be found in secondary industry and inadequate employment in tertiary industry. That is to say, industrial structure in Liuzhou has deficiencies and calls for restructuring and optimizing. In terms of transformation in land use structure, vertically speaking, apparent shifts in land use structure can be found in Liuzhou from2000to2010. The share of land for industries went down while that of land for roads, squares, municipal utility and infrastructure went up. The analysis of land use structure reveals that the diversity and function of land utilization improved. The proper increase in urban construction land and the optimized land structure supported the development of the city and people’s living environment. The improved infrastructure enhanced the capacity of public service and overall function of the city. Horizontally speaking, the share of land for industry is higher and that of land for green space is lower than the standards formulated by the Ministry of Construction, hence more efforts in restructuring land use in Liuzhou.Second, the analysis of the change rate index of industrial structure and land use reveals that industrial structure changed more rapidly than land use structure did, which means that land use restructuring lagged behind industrial restructuring, hence the need to establish a fine interactive relation between the two. From the change of GDP per capita and Per capita construction land, the rate of growth of GDP per capita is faster than the rate of growth of Per capita construction land, it means that the growth rate of urban construction land that value off the Secondary industry and tertiary industry the influence of the growth benefits is reducing; The unit production value rate analysis shows that, in2010for GDP for one Million than in2000put less35.57%of urban construction land in Liuzhou, means the land use efficiency improve industrial development on the influence of the urban construction land goes less.Last, the a gray correlation coefficient and gray typical correlation analysis reveals that apparent interactive relations can be found in urban land use and industrial structure, which is mainly reflected through the correlation between the output value share and employment share of tertiary industry, and the land for public facilities, municipal utility, road and square, external transport infrastructure and green space, land use structure are responsible in part for city "recessive unemployment" and "underemployment" coexisted phenomenon in Liuzhou. The analysis also shows that land use structure, industrial land, storage land the large proportion, restricted the second industry development and the upgrading of the industrial structure adjustment in Liuzhou; Industry development can also cause city residents for the road of land and square the increase of foreign land for traffic demand.finally, the results of the study on the above analysis, combined with the actual Liuzhou city, analysed the coordinated development between urban land use structure and industrial structureand, then raised the urban land use structure and industrial structure optimization and adjustment suggestion.
