With the continuous development of mobile communication technology, especially the3G network technology and mobile terminals, science outreach practitioners in China need tothink how to use the advantages of the mobile network (MN), to understand the patterns andoperational mechanism for designing MN-based science outreach products, and how todevelop relevant service and marketing strategies. All these initiatives bring urgent problemsfor science outreach practitioners to solve, which might create new opportunities for thewhole industry.With strategic management science and marketing as the main theoretical basis, thisarticle reviews the current development of the mobile network., Starting from concretepractices for developing MN-based science outreach products, the article also use literaturereview, case studies and user research to analyze the industrial structure of mobile networkand communication activities based on mobile terminals. Relevant development patterns andsustainable operation mechanisms are recommended based on the study of users’ behaviorsand demands. With examples developed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the article alsomakes suggestions about the design process.In this article, the author first analyzes the current status of science outreach productsbased on mobile network (MN), including an introduction to projects and products developedby government agencies and public sectors home and abroad. Based on the analysis, threegroups (children and teenagers, migrant workers from rural areas, white collars) are selectedas main target users of MN-based science outreach products. The author further investigatesthe demands of these user groups for developing tailored products. With two relativelyinfluential products as examples, the author suggests the developing process and servicestrategies. Based on user analysis and case studies, the author summarizes the developmentpattern and operating mechanism of MN-based science outreach products, which may bringsome useful recommendations for relevant practitioners and organizations. Recommendationsto the Chinese Academy of Science are finally made, with a primary planning of concrete product examples. In order to promote development of the whole industry, the article alsomakes suggestions about how to develop the MN-based science outreach industry.Through this study, development patterns and operational mechanisms related toMN-based science outreach products are summarized. Recommendations are made on futureplans and strategies for implementation. The author aims to share the information and makesome useful suggestions for relevant organizations and practitioners to develop MN-basedscience outreach products and service strategies.
