Production planning is to make overall arrangements for the production tasks in the plan period, including the product type, quantity, production progress and other indicators, and it is the production guideline to achieve business targets. It is not only an important reference to formulate other business plans of an enterprise, but also the key factor for the increase of enterprise economic returns and cost saving.With the rapid development of technology and increasingly diversified market demands, the former large-scale mass production pattern can not meet the requirements of current dynamic market development, and is gradually replaced by the production pattern of the multi-variety and small batch. Under the production environment of multi-variety and small batch, how to implement scientific and effective production plan and control is an unprecedented challenge.This article selects PL Company as the study object, which is a typical multi-variety and small batch enterprise. By making in-depth and careful investigation on PL Company’s operation system and analyzing product features, this article lists problems existing in production planning and control system. Then by applying the theory of Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP Ⅱ), Just in Time (JIT), Theory of Constraints (TOC), postponement manufacturing, etc in PL Company production planning and control system and utilizing the method of combining qualitative analysis and quantitative calculation, this paper comes up with a series of improvements and implementing plans, such as forecasting plan, master production schedule and postponed manufacturing combination, ABC classification of materials management, material requirements planning with PUSH and PULL combination, vendor management inventory, Shop floor schedule, etc. These improvements and implementing plans can improve on-time delivery, production planning achieved rate, inventory turnover, as well as reduce inventory amount, which enhances operational efficiency and optimizes production planning and control system.The study on PL’s production planning and control system shows that the optimum integration of various methods and the continual improvement has not only utilized company resources properly, but also improved the performance of the company characterized by multi-variety and small batch. This study not only has practical significance in guiding PL Company’s production planning and control, but also provides certain reference for other manufacturing companies.
