With the rapid development of China’s urbanization, the land demand isgradually increasing year by year. Dynamic monitoring of land use bears theadvantage of real time data acquisition capability with advanced technology, it canpromptly and precisely obtain the dynamics of land use and land cover change, andoffer data sets for land and resource management. Using technology of GIS, GPS andRS is the principal approach of land use dynamic monitoring, because it can observethe land earth rapidly, accurately, real time and regionally and has powerfulprocessing and analysis capabilities for spatial information. This paper presents an overview of the concept and development of land usedynamic monitoring. And the basic theory of the3S technology, the background andsignificance of this study, and the research contents and methods, are described. Onthis basis, taking the Daxing District of Beijing for example, SPOT5images acquiredin2007and2008were used as the primary data sets. Based on the maps generatedfrom the second national land recourse investigation, and combined with DEM data,we produced an orthographic map with a resolution of2.5m covering the whole areaof Daxing District. The land change information was extracted mainly by means ofvisual interpretation. In association with field investigation, we conducted a survey tovalidate the remote sensing results. In addition, the accuracy of the DOM and changeinformation was evaluated. As a result, the land change information for newconstructions in the Daxing District in2008was obtained. Finally, the land type and size, etc. of the land occupied by new constructions inthe last year were inspected by means of statistical analysis. And the applicability ofthe monitoring results in the investigations of land use change, basic farmlandprotection, implementation of land planning, and land law enforcement inspectionwere discussed.
