The background and history of roading in Anhui province during the period of the Pepublic Of China, and the founding of road management systems in that periods are systematacially reviewed and analysised to find out the course of them, and to reveal the influnce of roading in the social vicissitudes of Anhui.The geographical environment and traditional traffic development of Anhui province is discussed in Chapter1. In the period before1920, water transportation take more important place in Anhui province, and the land trcffic is mainly in the form of dak, the way of dak then developed into roads. Besides, ship and railage, that marked the modernization of Anhui traffic, came forth before1920s.The background and histories of roading in Anhui province during the period of1920-1949are discussed in Chapter2. During these30years, the roading of Anhui experienced the course of founding, development, devastation and rehabilitation. On the one hand, road traffic is closely related to polity, military affairs and economy. On the other hand, roading developed quickly only on condition that political and economical situation is stable, with professional and technical personnels and necessary outlay and materials.The founding of road management systems of Anhui province is discussed in Chapter3. The development of road management departments and road management policies during the period of the Republic of China are related.The relationship of roading and the development of Anhui society and economy is discussed in Chapter4. The positive influences of roading to the development of economy, polity, living standard and ideology of people are analyzed.
