Uncovering Ghost:the Conceptualization And Identification Of News Text Frame

Despite its popularity in the research field of journalism and communication, the concept of frame analysis is still quite vague, especially in the field of news content. There are numerous theoretical and operational concepts. Identification methods are varied too. Frame is touted as "a hidden ghost" by some researchers. Based on former studies, this article makes an integrated discussion on the concepts and identification methods of news text frame. We will first compare the10often-cited definitions of frame, and then try to create a new one. This article will discriminate the5influential identification methods in this field-"Lists of Frames","Interpretative Packages","Discourse Analysis", and "Discourse Structures", then critically evaluate its application situation. Finally, we will create a convenient and effective way of identifying news frame on the basis of references to others.In conclusion, both the definition and identification method we raise in this article are original. We argue that quantitative and qualitative analysis should be combined in the discussion of the news text frame. In order to reduce the subjectivity in the process, we should adopt inter-coder reliability test. Furthermore, in order to advance the validity and profundity, we should combine the social-historical background and relevant former discussions with framing analysis. It is crucial for researcher to bear in mind that media context, news production, and media effect should be taken as a whole when doing frame analysis.
