Routing protocol was an important research field of wireless sensor networks, and reliability, low cost, easy to maintain are design goals of WSN routing protocol. This paper studied hierarchical routing protocols, chain routing protocols in wireless sensor network, and analyzed characteristics for various typical protocols; then summarized several WSN applications of intelligent algorithms; finally, this paper proposed a novel routing protocol HMCRP (Hierarchical Multi-Chain Routing Protocol) which based on hierarchical topology, PEGASIS and ant several intelligent algorithms. Virtual grid network was adopted to simplify topology complexity; intelligent algorithms ensured a globally optimal transmission path; considering node performance and chain data transmission cost, a novel chain header selection formula was put forward. Finally, MatLab and OMNeT++were utilized to do performance analysis. Firstly, the simulation results for chain routing protocols and proposed protocols proved that new method of forming chain could get global optimization; Secondly, the simulation results among several intelligent algorithms (simulated annealing algorithm, genetic algorithm and ant colony algorithm) showed different characteristics among these intelligent algorithms; Finally, the simulation results among several hierarchical routing protocols proved that:compared with typical hierarchical protocols, HMCRP could effectively extend network life cycle, reduce average energy consumption of data transmission and increase packet received rate.
