Nowadays, system vitualization is a fashional information technology widely researched by academia and industry. Due to its excellent characteristics at resource management, servers consolidation, green energy-saving and security, system virtualization is widely used at emerging large data centers and cloud computing technology. Xen is one of the most excellent system virtualization platforms, and it is very popular due to its open source. With the development of computer communication technology, the traditional telecommunications network gradually transitions to next-generation telecommunications bearer network based on IP. Nowadays most of telecommunications services are based on X86architecture, therefore the research to IP-based telecommunications services has more value. Especially in the telecom operators’data-centers, virtualization system for telecommunications services is widely used. This paper focuses on the Xen virtual machine migration technology, combining telecommunications services’characteristics to optimize Xen live migration. In this paper, system virtualization’s developments and basic technologies are introduced, and its basic principle, realization and key technologies are researched in detail. By combining key papers about Xen and its source code, this paper analyzes Xen live migration’s main contents and methods, and focuses on the basic principle, steps and key technologies of memory iterative pre-copy algorithm. Combined with characteristics of telecommunications services, key factors that affect the migration effects including downtime, total migration time and migration bandwidth are analyzed, and the need to optimize the migration bandwidth is proposed. This paper builds a mathematical model for Xen live migration’s memory iterative pre-copy algorithm, then proposes a new bandwidth-optimized pre-copy algorithm. In this algorithm, the migration bandwidth can be controlled according needs and in real time during every iterative pre-copy round, while the total migration time and downtime can still be maintained within the acceptable range, then this algorithm can enhance the migration effect of virtual machines which run telecommunications services. This optimized virtual machine migration method for telecommunications services is realized in this paper and some comparative experiments are completed. The experimental results show that this optimized method could improve the virtual machine migration effect for telecommunications services.
