ACARS (Aircraft Communication Addressing and reporting system) is an aircraft and a ground station by radio or satellite transmission short message (message) digital data link system.This paper traces the history of the development of ACARS system. A few early eighty’s ACARS system has appeared, but not in the large airways are widely used. With the development of science and technology, ACARS has been widely applied in present civil aviation system. On the plane, ACARS system consists of a called ACARS management unit (MU) avionics computer and a control display unit (MCDU). MU is used to send and receive from ground-based VHF radio digital message. On the ground, ACARS system consists of a radio transceiver that constitute the network component, it can accept (or transmit) data link message, and distribute them to the network of different airlines.The authors studied the principle and structure of ACARS. ACARS system mainly consists of three parts:airborne equipment, service providers, ground processing system. Airborne equipment is the core of the ACARS management unit (MU). ACARS airborne equipment consists of a terminal and a router. The terminal is ACARS message transmission starting point and end of the upload. MU/CMU is a router. Its function is to pass open network to provide the most convenient transmission route.And in the two case, namely the down-link example:departure delay and upload link examples:the weather report. Introduces the application of ACARS system. And at the same time on the job, launched a ACARS application author. Is that of the Eastern Airlines aircraft equipped with two-way communication function space ACARS system, and to ensure that can receive and print upload various message, so as to realize the real time dynamic tracking aircraft. On the eastern fleet of13A320aircraft ACARS system transmitting message format inconsistent problem is discussed. At the same time, the author as an avionics engineer, in the maintenance process, encountered a lot of problems related to ACARS, by summing up, ACARS system fault is mainly manifested in the system of airborne equipment software, hardware problems and use of personnel in the aspects such as question etc. Finally this article on ACARS in the future development of civil aviation is forecasted and the use of expectation.In this paper, the design of ACARS system, the principle and the use of a perfect design, in order to intuitive understanding of ACARS application author.
